Texting While Driving Laws
The state of Texas has banned school bus drivers and first year drivers from any cell phone use while behind the wheel. San Antonio has banned all drivers from texting while driving since 2010, with fines of $200 for a first infraction. Drivers are allowed to make calls on their cell phones, but nothing else. Current legislation is pushing to extend the law to ban phone calls as well.
Texting while driving is classified as distracted driving under the law, and can lead to fatal accidents and serious personal injuries. In 2011, 1.3 million crashes involved cell phone use. Researchers estimate that when a driver uses a cell phone for texting or otherwise, they are distracted from the road for a minimum of five seconds. In that time, a driver may not see the traffic light turn red; the brake lights turn on ahead of them; or a child dart out into the street. Text messaging alone increases your crash risk by 23%.
